Applications

Hydrogen and Fuel Cell

State-of-the-art characterization of the hydrogen storage properties of advanced materials requires specialized measurement techniques and equipment for making a variety of measurements including: Pressure-Composition Isotherms (PCT). The PCTPro-2000 is the most advanced fully automated instrument for measuring gas sorption properties of materials, especially for hydrogen storage materials. It is specifically designed for high precision measurements over a wide range of sample sizes, pressures and temperatures

Carbon Capture and Sequestration measurement by thermal analysis

Thermal analysis techniques can be used to study carbon capture and sequestration. Gas absorption and desorption can be studied by heat flow, mass and volume change techniques.

Observation of a phase transition at high temperature under various atmospheres

In order to develop new materials that have desired properties, it is essential to evaluate the materials under various atmospheric environments. The infrared heating high-temperature attachment Reactor X has a corrosion-resistant sample chamber separated from the heater section, so it can be used to perform high-temperature XRD measurements under various atmospheres, such as hydrogen, ammonia, high humidity and so forth. Using Reactor X with a 2D detector capable of high-speed XRD measurement, it is possible to investigate in detail rapid phase transitions under heating in various atmospheres.

Determination of Trace Elements and Isotope Ratios in Borated Cooling Water of a Nuclear Power Plan

Nuclear power plants are an important and efficient source of electrical energy, supplying over 12% of the world’s electricity. Many modern plants use a pressurized water reactor (PWR) due to their improved safety and self-regulating capability. The reactor coolant plays a very important role in the process. In a PWR, the primary coolant (water) is pumped under high pressure to the reactor core where it is heated by the energy generated by the fission of atoms. The higher water pressure enables more heat to be carried from the reactor and the heated, radioactive water then flows to a steam generator…

Analysis of food and agricultural samples using ICP-MS

Agricultural products play a significant role in the daily uptake of nutrients and fibers to maintain good health. The agricultural products and resulting foods contain nutritional elements in various concentrations but also elements deemed to be toxic to humans and/or animals. Besides the organically bound elements: hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, there are more than 30 dietary elements necessary for the correct functioning of living organisms. According to their concentration, these elements are classified into macroelements (Ca, Mg, Na, K, P, S, Fe, Cu, Zn) with concentration levels above 0.01% and microelements (Ge, B, Cr, Sn, Zn, F, I, Co,…

Analysis of TOC/TN in Product Quality Monitoring of Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is used in many processes. It can be used as a disinfectant in the food industry or in water purification, as an oxidation agent in chemical synthesis or as an environmentally friendly means of bleaching pulp, paper, and textiles. According to the different fields of application, products of various H2O2 concentrations and purity grades are available. To guarantee product quality H2O2 is monitored for elemental impurities, for example, for heavy metals or for TOC concentration. This application note focuses on the determination of TOC and TN in undiluted H2O2.

Linearity Test According to DIN EN ISO 9562 (Column Method)

AOX (AOX – absorbable organically bound halogens) is an analytical convention which represents the sum of all organically bound halogens (except fluorine), mainly used in water and waste water analysis. Solid samples like sludge or sediments can also contain AOX. The solid AOX however has to be determined by the batch method which is not part of this application. The compounds containing halogens are adsorbed onto the surface of activated carbon (charcoal) in dissolved or suspended form. The activated carbon is washed afterwards with aqueous nitrate washing solution to remove inorganic halides. During the combustion of the loaded charcoal in…

Determination of Total Chlorine in Derived or Secondary Fuels Using High-Temperature Combustion and Coulometric Titration

Waste materials are becoming more and more important as valuable feed materials for energy production, as fuels and recycled feed materials for the chemical industry. To ensure a trouble-free processing and high quality of the final products, the exact elemental composition has to be determined. In addition to heavy metals, carbon, hydrogen and sulfur, chlorine plays an important role. During processing, HCl can be formed and damage system components and contaminate costly catalysts. Under nonoptimal combustion conditions Cl compounds can influence the formation of extremely toxic dioxins. It’s therefore important to know the exact Cl content of the matrix being…

Comparison of TOC Determination Methods in Soil Sample

The carbon contained in soil has different sources and effects on the soil‘s quality. Total inorganic carbon (TIC), mainly carbonate and hydrogen carbonate, is a natural part of soil but can also derive from artificial addition and other sources. Total organic carbon (TOC) is generated by organic matter that is present from natural sources (plants, animals, degradation processes) and contaminations caused by humans and industrial and agricultural processes (oil residues, waste, overfertilization, etc.). Its content is influenced by erosion, biological decomposition (e.g., by bacteria), and farming. The TOC affects soil properties (e.g., color, fertility, toxicity). This makes TOC an important…
