Adiabatic Calorimeters User Training – Process Safety
SciMed Events
25th & 26th March 2025
SciMed Ltd is pleased to announce that in conjunction with our partners, Fauske and Associates it will be holding a training course on the topic of process safety, and more specifically the use of low phi adiabatic calorimeters.
The course will also address the interpretation of data from instruments such as the ARSST and VSP2 and how this data can be used in the evaluation of relief sizing.
This 2-day training will be given by Dr. Jim Burelbach and Gabe Wood of Fauske and Associates.
Countdown to event
Why should I attend?
This training will be useful to anyone involved in process safety, and particularly those involved in the use of adiabatic calorimeters and data interpretation.
The measurement aspect will be focused on data obtained from the Advanced Reactive System Screening Tool (ARSST) and Vent Sizing Package (VSP2). However, this course will also be useful for users of other adiabatic calorimeters such as the Phitec and for anyone involved in process safety using data from other sources.
This course will be based on practical cases and participants will have the opportunity to work through different examples of calculations. This will allow the implementation of the safety parameters obtained by various raw experimental data.
The aim is to keep the course in an informal format and the content can still be adapted to the specific needs of the participants. However, the course will aim to cover:
- Brief overview of the ARSST and VSP adiabatic calorimeters.
- Classification of the different types of vapour, gassy and hybrid phase reactions.
- Overview of the DIERS approach and qualitative explanation of the DIERS equations for vent sizing.
- Presentation of the simplified Fauske method for relief sizing.
- Examples of different calculations will be given. For each case, participants will have different examples of problems to solve, with the aim of giving students confidence in the practical application of the models for future use in real cases.
- Implementation of quality experimental measures to ensure high-reliability information that can be used in practice.
- Other data that can be drawn from the measurements will be discussed. For example, adiabatic temperature increase (ATR) and time to maximum rate (TMR).
