SciMed is a leading distributor of scientific equipment with a customer base across the UK and Ireland.

As part of our continued growth, we are recruiting a National Product Manager to look after the Handheld XRF (established company seeking a new distributor and have appointed SciMed) and the XRF Plating Thickness Tester (Bowman XRF) product range. The role can be based at our Stockport facility or from a UK central home location.

Travel to customers throughout the UK and Ireland (to support DAIL, our sister company) will be required, as well as occasional trips abroad for product training at manufacturers’ locations.

The position reports directly to the Sales Director and the Spectroscopy Team Leader.

About The Role

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain a territory plan to guide sales activities. Identify and characterise key customers and target accounts, and quantify the activities necessary to achieve and exceed sales targets.
  • Prospect and network in the region to meet and exceed target through a structured visit and call plan.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate knowledge of all products, business strategies, sales tools and pricing policies, as they relate to the territory.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate knowledge of the business needs of customers and how the products address those needs.
  • Carry out product demonstrations (primarily on site or at SciMed’s demonstration facility in Stockport) and organise events such as workshops and roadshows.
  • Support the organisation of product launches, seminars, webinars, exhibitions and other promotional events.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records of all activities within the company’s CRM database.
  • Manage opportunities within the CRM to allow timely and accurate sales forecasts.
  • Maintain strong and positive customer relationships to ensure SciMed’s long-term success.
  • Provide local knowledge, insight and feedback to suppliers.
  • Support colleagues within the Office, Sales and Marketing teams as required.
  • Maintain product and competitor knowledge.
  • Support installations and customer training.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential Role Requirementsand problem-solving skills with a focus on safety and performance.

  • Minimum of 3 years working in technical sales in a field associated with the products to be sold (for example XRF, metals analysis, elemental analysis).
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written (this may be assessed).
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to multi‑task and work to tight deadlines.
  • Able to demonstrate negotiation skills.
  • Enthusiastic team player.
  • Comfortable and confident in client‑facing scenarios.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel within the territory at the level necessary to excel in the role.
  • Willingness to travel to other countries for training purposes.
  • Ability to stay overnight where required.
  • Willingness to accept additional responsibilities as the role and experience grows.

Desirable

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) as a minimum, with emphasis on materials science or other physical sciences.
  • Prior technical sales experience in the field of XRF, metals analysis or elemental analysis.
  • Experience of using CRM software.
  • Field sales experience in either engineering, materials, pharmaceutical, chemistry or academic markets in the UK.
  • A scientist seeking a move into a commercial role may be considered.

  • Salary based on experience. Basic salary range £45K – £60K per annum + up to £20K OTE.

Selection Process

The selection process will be as follows:

1. Applications will be long‑listed to a list of candidates of no more than ten. The long‑list process will remain open until a suitable list is obtained.
2. Long‑list candidates will be invited to a 60‑minute web interview.
3. This list will be narrowed to a shortlist of no more than four and those candidates will be invited for a 1‑hour interview in person at our offices in Stockport.
4. If a suitable candidate is found, the position will be offered on the condition that two satisfactory references are received, one of which is from your current or last employer.
5. This role will remain open until a suitable candidate has been appointed and no specific timeframe is being worked to.

Start Date

This position is ready to be filled once a suitable candidate is found and, if applicable, their notice period is worked.
