About the Ion Chromatography Instrumentation

IC Overview

Ion-exchange chromatography is based, like all chromatographic separation methods, on interactions between a stationary and mobile phase (the eluent); in this instance usually ionic interactions.

For IC, the stationary phase is usually a polymer resin, and the choice of mobile phase will mainly depend on whether anions or cations are to be separated.

For anion separation carbonate soloutions are typical, whereas sulphonic acids are common as the eluent for the separation of cations.

The sample is carried through the column by the eluent and any ions that are present in the sample will interact with counter-ions on the resin.

Depending on properties such as charge or size there will be different ions retained for different times. The continuous flow of eluent carries the ions to a conductivity detector, where the now separated peaks are detected.

As in any chromatography, the substances to be analysed are not only separated, but they can also be identified and quantified with the aid of standards.

For the identification of an unknown substance, its retention time is compared to that of the standard. Quantification is undertaken by comparing the peak areas in the sample with those of a standard of known concentration.

Where is IC used?

IC is a common technique in a wide range of industries. Some of the most important areas are environmental monitoring in drinking water and wastewater. Additionally, IC can be used to measure agricultural pollutants fouling the water with high levels of nitrates and phosphates.

IC also is used for the quality control for anions and cations in power-plants, the pharmaceutical industry, urine analysis in occupational health, etc. One of the most common applications is for the measurement of sulphate as this is very difficult to measure by any other technique.

Why consider the Sykam IC range

Sykam is over 40 years old and has a global installed base of HPLC, prep-HPLC, IC and amino acid analysers.

Sykam manufacture the vast majority of parts in-house so the traceability, quality control, support and performance is second to none. A full range of IC configurations are possible from compact all-in-one entry level anion-or-cation-only, isocratic, manual injection systems through to fully automated, gradient, dual detector instruments.

We can offer both direct conductivity and suppressed conductivity detection. The suppressor is self-regenerating allowing for seamless long-term usage and ultimate performance.

Product FAQ's

Ion Chromatography is used in a wide range of industries, e.g. water, pharmaceuticals, waste, food and beverage, electronics and power.

Anions, cation, transition metals, organic acids and amines are usually measured using IC

Absolutely. The Sykam IC range is available with self-regenerating suppressor for both the longest lifetime and the best performance.

If upgraded to a combustion ion chromatogram system, or in combination with a combustion furnace, then fluoride analysis by IC is an accepted screening method for PFAS

IC is a sensitive methodology and can easily achieve sub ppb levels of detection.
