Revolutionise Powder Blending with Viavi NIR Systems - Matcon & SciMed Collaboration

12th Febuary 2024

On the 29th of November 2023, we embarked on an enlightening venture to Matcon’s headquarters in Evesham, a beacon of expertise in providing powder handling systems across the Food, Nutrition, Pharmaceutical, and Chemical sectors. Our mission was to engage in a series of educational discussions to promote the Viavi NIR systems, showcasing the heart of innovation shared by Matcon and SciMed UK.

Welcome from the Matcom Team

Matcon, one of the earliest adopters of the PAT-W, has worked closely with SciMed UK for many years, fostering a relationship built on trust and technological advancement. Darren Machen, Product Manager from SciMed UK, along with Matcon’s team comprising Ian Williams, Research and Development Manager, Jenni Westmacott, Graphics Specialist, and Kathryn Perry, Marketing Director, welcomed us.

Our shared goal was to capture a series of educational discussions on Optimising Powder Blending with Near Infrared Spectrometers, highlighting the seamless integration and efficiency of the Viavi NIR systems.

Preparation began on the 28th of November, as we set the stage in the warehouse, discussing the shoot’s logistics and the impactful shots we aimed to capture. The evening was spent in camaraderie, dining with the team and discussing the potential impact these videos would have on our customers and new NIR system users.

The shoot on the 29th of November was a deep dive into the practical applications of the Viavi NIR systems. We focused on showcasing the technology in action on a blender machine within the authentic setting of a warehouse. Our approach was methodical, highlighting the system’s design and functionality, with strategic camera placements to ensure comprehensive coverage. Our presenters, engaging directly with the machinery, provided real-time insights into how the Viavi NIR systems revolutionise operational efficiency, product quality, and waste minimisation.

Process NIR sensors offer an insight into the true blending cycle of any blender. NIR data gives both physical and chemical information of the ingredients within the process. Using various computational algorithms, you can visualise in real time the process. In essence you can set parameters that say the blend is complete. NIR makes sense for both QA and QC trails to show if two blends are the same or different. Ideally suited for when you want to compare recipes, suppliers of raw materials or used in validation of your operating procedures.

Darren Machen, Product Manager from SciMed UK commented:

“Online process NIR can allow you to make real-time processing decisions. Its non-invasive so naturally allows implementation with very little production inference. During blending you can take a snapshot every rotation meaning you now have hundreds of data points rather than relying on one thief sample. Thief samples are time consuming, labour intensive and not representative of the whole process. Customers who adopt NIR technology from good receipt to product release gain an in depth understanding of their process. Gaining knowledge and confidence working alongside their customers and suppliers”

Ian Williams, Research and Development Manager:

“I’ve been at Matcon now for 15 years, and the NIR has been an absolute game changer.” He also said “We used to do things like, physical sampling, digging into the container samples then you send them off and sometimes you never hear back from them. You can’t always trust the physical sample that’s been shipped around the world! With the NIR it’s just there, it’s literally a window into the container to see what’s going on and you get instant feedback.

That’s good for the customer as they have confidence in the machinery and equipment. It’s good for our business because we get instant feedback in real time on our trials!”

Lee Murfitt, Marketing Manager for SciMed Ltd, said

“As a Marketing Manager, I emphasise the importance of engaging educational video content. It’s vital in the digital age for customers to not only know our products but also how to use them effectively. High-quality educational videos give clear insights into our offerings and their use, improving user experience and building trust in our brand. Informed customers are empowered, and with engaging videos, we ensure they have the necessary tools to succeed with our products.”

This initiative culminated in a series of enlightening discussions, illustrating the innovative integration of MicroNIR Spectrometers in powder handling applications and the optimisation of powder blending with NIR spectrometers. These dialogues act as a conduit, linking potential users with technological advancements that can revolutionise their operational processes.
