Micro X-ray diffraction of the crystalline material that forms a tooth

Enamel and dentin are the key parts of a tooth, and they are known to be formed primarily of hydroxyapatite. In addition, lasers are used to treat dental caries and strengthen dentin, but it is not well-known whether tooth components degenerate due to laser irradiation. With a micro X-ray diffractometer, it is possible to irradiate with X-rays onto a desired spot size ranging from a few tens to a few hundreds μm, by focusing the X-rays with a collimator. In addition, the diffraction lines produced by the irradiated spot are detected by a two-dimensional detector, and thus it is possible to easily observe phenomena such as the orientation of microregions, and the effects of large grains.
