What is the effect of air contamination on machinery and lubricants?

What is the effect of air contamination on machinery and lubricants?

Air can be found anywhere, in an equipment’s hydraulic system, in reservoirs used to separate solid impurities in fluids, and in lubricating oils themselves.

Air found in fluids not only shortens a lubricant’s life but can also cause numerous problems in a hydraulic and lubricating oil system such as unacceptable noise, poor component response due to spongy behaviour of aerated fluids, thermal degradation, cavitation damage, and severe fluid degradation.

How to measure air contamination in lubricants

The parameter used to measure the air contamination is called The Air Release Value.

An Air Release Value Analyser automatically calculates final sample density to determine the air release value.

The Koehler Air Release Value Analyser consists of a test vessel and air flow control equipment for delivering heated air at the specified flow rate to a lubricating oil sample maintained at constant temperature. The Integrated Touch Screen Control Panel guides the user from start to finish of test operation and provides density calculation and timing operation for measuring the air release value of the test sample.

What methods are used as part of the air release test within ASTM, IP, BS, DIN or ISO?

The air release tests are found in the following specifications of ASTM D3427; IP 313; ISO 9120; DIN 51381; BS 2000 Part 313

What features of an air release value analyser should a user look for.

The following features are key to making the Air Release Value simple and straightforward.

  • Integrated Touch Screen Control Panel
  • Automatic Lift System that moves test vessel from air source to balance sinker
  • Integrated Circulation Bath with water level indicator
  • Automated Jacketed Test Vessel draining
  • Safety Shield is included
