SciMed Awarded “Environmental Impact Champion” Status by Gambica

SciMed is proud to announce that we have been recognised as a Gambica Environmental Impact Champion for 2024. This acknowledgement highlights our commitment to understanding, measuring and ultimately reducing our environmental footprint as part of the wider scientific technology community.

The recognition comes through SciMed’s participation in the Gambica Environmental Impact Assessment Survey, a nationwide project designed to help organisations benchmark and improve their environmental performance. The survey encourages companies to track core sustainability metrics, understand their carbon impact and contribute to an industry-wide push towards Net Zero.

Gathering comprehensive data to measure our impact

To qualify for the Environmental Impact Champion badge, SciMed undertook a detailed internal audit of our environmental indicators, coordinated by our Operations team.

Using Gambica’s Environmental Impact Assessment Tool, SciMed compiled data across a wide range of emissions-related factors for the full 2024 calendar year. This included:

  • Water consumption
    • Electricity and gas usage
    • Wastewater, waste generation and recycling levels
    • Business travel including short haul and long haul flights
    • Company car mileage and private mileage undertaken for business
    • Hotel stays associated with work travel

This data was submitted in the structured format required by Gambica.

It was then assessed, converted into CO2 equivalents and benchmarked against other participating organisations.

Creating a Benchmark for Future Sustainability Progress

This data was submitted in the structured format required by Gambica. It was then assessed, converted into CO2 equivalents and benchmarked against other participating organisations.

As this was SciMed’s first year participating in the framework, the dataset now forms a baseline. The team is already planning to compile equivalent figures for previous years to identify developing trends over time and support long term sustainability planning.

Gambica’s wider initiative supports companies across the UK in tracking environmental impact consistently. The organisation then uses the data to produce benchmarking reports across the sector to highlight progress towards lower emissions and reduced carbon footprints
